Geological exploration

The copper-nickel reserves of the Zhdanovskoye, Zapolyarnoye, Kotselvaara and Semiletka Fields were further explored and upgraded to higher classification categories.

Mining assets

Severny Mine is developing Pechenga ore fields (the Kola Peninsula), including the Zhdanovskoye, Zapolyarnoye, Kotselvaara and Semiletka (Kaula-Kotselvaara Mine) Fields. In addition to those, Severny Mine’s licence block also spans the Sputnik, Bystrinskoye, Tundrovoye and Verkhneye Fields. Severny Mine (including Kaula-Kotselvaara Mine) produces disseminated sulphide ores containing nickel, copper and other commercial components.

ConcentrationArtificial improvement of metallurgical feedstock mineral grades by removing a major portion of waste rock not containing any valuable minerals.Go to the glossary facilities

Kola MMCKola Mining and Metallurgical CompanyGo to the glossary’s Concentrator (Zapolyarny) produces copper-nickel concentrate subjected to briquetting (similar to South Africa’s Nkomati concentrate, which also undergoes briquetting).

SmeltingA pyrometallurgical process performed at high temperatures enabling the complete melting down of the processed material.Go to the glossary facilities

Briquettes are delivered to the smelting facilities of Kola MMC (Nickel) to produce converter matte. RefiningThe process of extracting high-purity precious metals through their separation and removal of impurities.Go to the glossary Shop and Nickel ElectrolysisElectrochemical oxidation/reduction processes in electrolyte-immersed electrodes driven by electric current from external sources.Go to the glossary Shop (Monchegorsk) process converter matte from the smelting facilities and Polar Division, as well as copper cake from Norilsk Nickel Harjavalta (Finland).
