Norilsk-Taimyr Energy Company has brought online new local treatment plants. Worth over RUB 1 bn, these commercial facilities have become the first of their kind in Norilsk and are expected to enable continuous automated monitoring at officially registered discharge points.

**New treatment plants will help improve Norilsk’s environment**

Built at officially registered discharge points for industrial wastewater, the new plants are designed to remove suspended solids, petroleum products, metals and other harmful impurities as required by the environmental standards for fishing grounds. Previously, discharges have had to be routinely analysed in order to ensure compliance. Following the commissioning of the plants, the monitoring will be done remotely in a continuous and automated manner. Established by law, this requirement for wastewater disposal applies to all industrial companies in Russia.

Wastewater will be treated with chemicals that either precipitate the contaminants or bring them to the surface. Suspended solids will be filtered out, resulting in clean water.

The new facilities vary in capacity and serve Norilsk’s major industrial enterprises. They are the first of industrial wastewater treatment plants slated to appear in Norilsk, with 44 customers already connected to the network.

Started in 2019, the project involved Norilskproject Institute, Gipronickel Institute’s branch in Norilsk, as the designer and Norilsknickelremont, ITS, and SEVM’s Norilsk Installation Department as civil works contractors. The equipment was supplied, installed and commissioned by Moscow-based iOteh (Ion Exchange Technologies), which has a significant track record in implementing similar projects.

The total construction cost of the first three facilities stands at around RUB 1.141 bn. Another plant, to be worth almost RUB 500 m, is being built. Norilsk-Taimyr Energy Company plans to continue pursuing ambitious environmental projects and add new local treatment plants. Furthermore, its capital construction programme envisions twelve projects to build stormwater and industrial wastewater treatment facilities in 2023–2025. They will vary in capacity, ranging from 700 to 10,000 cu m / day, and serve different production sites.

The newly built facilities will not have a negative impact on the environment. Any waste generated during the purification will not require additional treatment and may be taken to regular solid waste landfills.
