Dudinka – “Taymyr”, the northernmost ice arena in the world, is open

The opening ceremony of “Taymyr”, the northernmost ice arena in the world, took place in Dudinka today.

The red ribbon was cut by Viktor Tomenko, Deputy Governor of the Krasnoyarsk Territory and Chairman of the Government of the Krasnoyarsk Territory, Ildar Dzhuraev, Head of the Taymyr Municipal District, Lyudmila Magomedova, Member of Legislative Assembly of the Krasnoyarsk Territory and Dmitriy Sviridov, Deputy Director of the Polar Division of OJSC MMCMining and Metallurgical CompanyGo to the glossary Norilsk Nickel. In his speech during the opening ceremony of the Winter Sports Center Viktor Tomenko said that the opening of the ice arena in Taymyr “…will give us an opportunity to train the champions not only of the Krasnoyarsk Territory and Russia, but of the whole world”. Ildar Dzhuraev, Taymyr Head, pointed out: “Now Taymyr has its own sports facility, which is the most up-to-date sport complex in the Polar Region. I’m sure, the opening of the ice arena will become a starting point of the new period of sports development in our municipal district and will result in new victories of Taymyr sportsmen”.

Special interactive areas for citizens were open in the ice rink building. A wind band performed instrumental versions of modern songs. Guests were met by volunteers from the Taymyr Youth Center, pupils of the “Junior” Children Technical Creativity Center. Animators and life-size puppets of the Sochi 2014 Olympic Games symbols added to the joyous and merry celebration. Representatives of five Taymyr ethnic groups participated in the festivities, they made symbolic gifts to the Winter Sports Center, and the Heyro ensemble performed a dance with tambourines. A synchronized skating group, young hockey players from the Krasnoyarsk School of Olympic Reserve and Norilsk sportsmen entered the ice rink. Performance groups from Norilsk came up the stage and congratulated Taymyrians on this occasion.

The greatest surprise for the public was the performance by Tatyana Totmianina and Maxim Marinin, 2006 Olympic Champions. The figure skater said the Taymyrian ice was of quite high quality. After the official part of the event “Taymyr”, the northernmost ice arena in the world, opened its doors for everybody, and ice skating fans were offered an opportunity to skate on the arena’s ice free of charge. Mass skate hire, ice hockey, figure skating, training courses for students, gym and choreography classes – this is just a short list of what the “Taymyr” Sports Center can offer to sports fans of all ages. According to preliminary estimates the ice arena will be visited by approximately 1 480 guests a week.
