A pilot project of implementing a corporate standard ‘Isolation of Energy Sources’ (CS IES) was carried out in the melting shop of Kola MMC (a subsidiary of Norilsk Nickel) during the production process.
Corporate standard IES aims to ensure safety of workers regarding effects of any type of energy (kinetic, mechanical, thermal, chemical, electrical, electromagnetic, etc.) during maintenance and operation of deenergized machines and equipment.
To prevent inadvertent or erroneous activation of the energy source, safety switches are used. When they are installed, possibility of running the equipment or power supply is completely excluded.
Procedure of workers’ actions when implementing blocking is described in detail in the matrices. These managerial and engineering documents were elaborated by Norilsk Nickel specialists for each type of equipment operated by the company.
More than 500 locking devices for isolation of different energy sources were acquired for the melting shop of Kola MMC.
In 2016, Kola MMC is planning to obtain safety switches for all energy sources that exist in the company.
