Kola MMC (part of Nornickel Group) has completed an upgrade to distribution substation RP-72, and main stepdown substation 11E (GPP-11E) at its production site in Monchegorsk. The modernisation will guarantee a stable and reliable electricity supply to the main processing facilities of the nickel tankhouse and the energy supply centre at Kola MMC as well as to third party consumers.
RP-72 and GPP-11E were made operational in 1981, during the fifth stage of the Severonickel Plant’s expansion. By now, the equipment has become worn out and obsolete, with spare components no longer in production. To provide a reliable and uninterrupted electricity supply, the switchgears RU-10 kV were replaced with modern equipment.
The new switchgear will have two 10kV busbars, which will consist of cells with vacuum circuit breakers, microprocessor-based protection units, arc flash protection with optical arc fault sensors and antiresonance voltage transformers.
The total upgrade costs for two substations are estimated at around RUB 350 mln.
