Edinstvo, part of Nornickel Group, has increased the bandwidth (from 40 to 200 Gbps) and reliability of the Norilsk fibre optic communication line.
The bump-up in speed was made possible thanks to the replacement of active equipment at the nodes of the fibre optic line that had been built earlier by Edinstvo. The upgrade yielded a 5x boost in bandwidth. In addition, the company made the line more reliable by utilising horizontal directional drilling (HDD) on the most technically challenging cable section.
“Traffic in the region had been trending up for a while, but 2020 brought with it a major hike in terms of business and user demand. Not just Nornickel operations, but also social and government facilities and the community needed higher and faster bandwidth. That was our call to action,” says Tatyana Mokhova, Edinstvo’s CEO.
The company had the added challenge of ensuring reliable network operation on a difficult section passing through the Yenisey River — the area of Igarka town (Krasnoyarsk Territory).
This was accomplished as part of a unique project implemented during the
Equipment replacement needed for the speed boost was finished by the end of the 2021 summer vacation season. To make broadband internet access more readily available, Edinstvo also introduced new tariffs for mobile operators that render ISP services for local businesses and communities.
Taimyr residents have had fibre optic communication since 2017 thanks to a 956 km line between Novy Urengoy and Norilsk, whose construction was also handled by Edinstvo. Before that, people and businesses had had to rely on a satellite link.
The five-time increase in internet speed will ensure smooth development of the Norilsk Industrial District and successful implementation of digital projects.
