The Company’s R&D Digital Lab won awards at the MineDigital Competition held as part of the MINEX Russia 2019 mining forum. The gold winner was the Conveyor Contaminant Identification project that applies artificial intelligence technology to recognise non-metallic matter on the conveyor which, if entering the concentrator’s crusher, can damage the equipment or cut the conveyor belt. The project has been successfully piloted at Polar Division’s Talnakh Concentrator and is about to be rolled out across all of the Company’s facilities, including Kola MMC.
Bronze award was won for the Smart Tailing Dump project leveraging all the best modern monitoring technology. The project focuses on the analysis of satellite data based on radio positioning which helps locate potential strata movements with the millimetre accuracy and enables more frequent dam movement monitoring. The project was initiated by Kola MMC.
Digital Lab established in late 2017 as the Company’s R&D centre employs Industry 4.0 instruments to tackle challenging production tasks. It pilots various technologies, including artificial intelligence (neural networks), industrial internet of things, VR, drones (unmanned aerial vehicles), exoskeletons, mine surveying robots, etc. Apart from using the solutions developed by the Lab in-house, Nornickel is also planning to bring them to market.
