Polar Division started tests on the project capable of producing additional 5 000 tons of copper per annum

The Polar Division of MMCMining and Metallurgical CompanyGo to the glossary Norilsk Nickel began pilot testing for the processing of technogenic raw materials of Copper Plant at Norilsk concentrator. According to preliminary estimates, if successful, it could provide additional 5,000 tonnes of marketable copper per year.

Copper Plant Smelter annually produces up to 100 thousand tonnes of low grade recyclable materials, man-made materials with a low content of non-ferrous metals. The resulting raw material is drawn partly back into production or is stockpiled at the plant.

With the increasing production capacity of Talnakh concentrating plant after the implementation of the project “The second starting complex” part of production capacities of Norilsk Concentrator will be available. To improve the efficiency of the equipment it was decided to conduct tests on processing low grade recyclables of the Copper Plant stockpiled in the past. Depending on the results of tests, the concentrator will process up to 90 thousand tons of low grade recyclables of the Copper Plant per month. According to preliminary estimates, it will make it possible to produce 5,000 tonnes of marketable copper.

Implementation of this technical solution embraced experts from Copper Plant, Norilsk Concentrator, Center for engineering support of production, scientific and technical department and production department of the Polar Division of the company.

The test will continue until the end of November. If the results are positive, production capacities of Norilsk Concentrator will be loaded with Copper Plant raw materials for several years ahead.
