Kola MMC helped Monchegorsk’s Central District Hospital to repair a CT scanner. “We had to take proactive steps to contain the spread of COVID-19 at our production facilities and support the areas where we operate. A dedicated task force was rolled out to address emerging issues quickly,” said Evgeny Borzenko, Vice President, Head of Nornickel’s Kola Division and CEO of Kola MMC.
Over the year, the Company spent more than RUB 20 bn to combat the coronavirus and defuse the situation in the regions where its operations are based. With Nornickel’s support, an infectious diseases ward was opened in Monchegorsk, premises were renovated, and state-of-the-art equipment was procured to open a laboratory for COVID-19 tests. The Company helped to repair a CT scanner and purchase personal protective equipment, sanitisers, medicines, ventilators and other medical equipment for the Monchegorsk’s and Pechenga’s Central District hospitals. This support continues to this day.
“We make every possible effort to support the healthcare system in the regions where our facilities operate and help to do what is urgent and necessary amid the pandemic,” emphasised Evgeny Borzenko. Nornickel and Kola MMC also extended aid to small and medium-sized businesses. To support the most vulnerable population groups in the Monchegorsk and Pechenga districts, the Company donated almost 2.5 thousand food sets, and contributed 59 laptops to schoolchildren from low-income families for distance learning.
In 2020, the key event in this area was the signing of amendments to the Partnership Agreement between Nornickel and the Government of the Murmansk Region. Earlier in October, the Company’s President Vladimir Potanin and the region’s Governor Andrey Chibis had signed another addendum envisaging, among other things, the Company’s aid in the renovation of the Murmansk Region’s Bayandin Clinical Hospital and in the construction of an ice arena in Monchegorsk.
